Piston Type Hydraulic Accumulator FAQ

1. Why is Nitrogen used as the compressible pre-fill medium for
accumulators ?

Because :
a. of low permeation rates through elastomeric components, and
b. because it will not cause a diesel explosion when compressed fast in the presence of hydrocarbon (like hydraulic oil) and
c. because it is less excitable than some other gasses (less adiabatic)

2. What are the parameters governing Materials of construction choice.
Materials are chosen according to :-
a. Strength to weight ratio
b. Suitable corrosion resistance compatibility with the fluids and the installation environment.
c. Cost

3. What are the Advantages of Hydro-pneumatic Piston Accumulators :-
a. The loss of pneumatic (N2) pre-fill pressure is gradual, as a result of dynamic seal wear.
Whereas membrane separator accumulators fail suddenly, generally without
warning of impending "doom"
b. The discharge flow rate from a piston type can be much greater than from a membrane type because of the encumbrances to flow velocity, that are used to stop membranes vomiting down the discharge hole/port.
c. The cost of replacement seals is less than replacement membranes.

The name hydraulic accumulator covers those hydraulic products that are designed specifically for the storage (accumulation) of liquid under pressure. However, because of the improvements in design of equipment, which has grown from the storage devices, other functions have become loosely associated with the name Accumulator. These other types of units should more properly be called by their function, e.g. – Pulsation Dampeners, Liquid Borne Noise Silencers, Line Surge Alleviators, Pump Controllers, Transfer Barriers, etc. More about accumulators...
